Stu Parker Can’t Google
If you haven’t been following the saga of this SOPA legislation, here’s some background on just how dreadful it is. It’s a power play from big corporate media companies — the sort of legislation that nearly everyone strenuously opposes but which might pass because the money is on the wrong side.
Nearly everyone strenuously opposes, except for Apple, of course. Apple joins the ranks of Gruber’s favorite software and hardware companies: Adobe, Symantec, Dell, and Microsoft. I’m pretty sure those four would be 2, 3, 4, and 5 on Gruber’s “My Top 5 Favorite Companies” list.
Interestingly not present in that list is Google. Peculiar, since wasn’t Gruber just talking about how Apple is the company you should trust, and not Google? Shouldn’t it be Google then who is trying to erode the internet for their own nefarious purposes?
Even more peculiar is Gruber not at all mentioning that Apple supports SOPA, even though he opposes it himself. I wonder why Gruber would leave that part out.
Stu cites an article from mid-November to defend his statements. Never mind that Gruber probably wouldn’t put Adobe on a list of his favourite companies, but Stu’s article is woefully outdated.
Many big names in the tech community—including Twitter, Facebook, Google and Apple—are opposed to SOPA, which has support from groups representing content makers.
(from the International Business Times)
The Protect-IP Act, a bill in the Senate, would do much the same thing. The Business Software Alliance — which includes Microsoft, Apple, Intel and Adobe, and focuses heavily on anti-piracy efforts — is opposed to SOPA, as are major players in tech, including Google, Apple and Facebook.
